Pope Francis holds a private audience with Maltese President George Vella, who gives him a computer for the Mother of Mercy ambulatory which serves the poor in St. Peter's Square.

The President of Malta, George Vella, met with Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican on Thursday.

Their meeting lasted a little over an hour, during which the Pope and the President exchanged gifts.

Pope Francis presented President Vella with a bronze sculpture titled “Intergenerational Dialogue,” as well as a book from his papal magisterium.

The President returned the favor with an all-in-one PC for the Mother of Ambulatory Mercy, a clinic in St. Peter's Square that welcomes people facing financial difficulties.

The Pope made an apostolic journey to Malta on April 2-3, 2022, visiting the capital, Valletta, as well as Rabat, Floriana and the island of Gozo.

“Cordial” talks at the Secretariat of State

According to the Holy See Press Office, President Vella then met with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Mgr. Wachowski Mirosław Stanisław, Undersecretary for Relations with States.

The talks at the Secretariat of State were “cordial” and focused on the good relations between the Holy See and the Republic of Malta.

“Attention then shifted to various issues of an international nature, with particular attention to the Mediterranean region, the conflicts in Israel, Palestine and Ukraine, as well as migration,” the statement said.
