Pope Francis went discreetly and solemnly to the Church of St. Augustine in the heart of Rome on Tuesday afternoon to pay homage to St. Monica, mother of the great saint to whom the church is dedicated. She too has been venerated as a saint for centuries and is commemorated in today’s liturgy.
The Holy See Press Office said in a statement that Pope Francis “visited the Church of St. Augustine in Rome and stopped in prayer in the chapel where the remains of the saint are kept.”
Greetings to the Augustinian community
The message also mentioned that the Pope had also stopped “in front of the image of the ‘Pilgrim Madonna’, a painting by Caravaggio located in the Cavalletti Chapel of the same church.
Before leaving the church, he “greeted the brothers, the nuns and the pilgrims present,” then, the statement concluded, he returned to the Vatican.
