Vatican officials announced Monday the appointment of Professor Paolo Garonna as the new president of the Centesimus Annus pro Pontifice Foundation, the Vatican-based nonprofit secular organization that promotes Catholic social teaching.

Garonna, who has been a member of the Foundation’s Scientific Committee since 2008, succeeds Professor Anna Maria Tarantola, former Deputy Director General of the Bank of Italy and President of RAI (the Italian public broadcaster), who has held the position since March 2019 and who announced that she would not renew her mandate for personal reasons.

Paolo Garonna is Professor of Economic Policy at the LUISS Guido Carli University of Rome. After graduating from the Sapienza University of Rome, he carried out studies and research in the United States at the University of Denver, Colorado, and in the United Kingdom at the University of Cambridge.

He has held several positions, including Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Director General of ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics), Chief Economist of Confindustria (the main Italian employers’ association) and Secretary General of the Italian Federation of Banks, Insurance and Finance. He is the author of studies and publications on the social doctrine of the Church, economics and finance.
