The protection of international human rights was at the heart of a discussion between the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Ms Tatiana Moskalkova, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Russian Federation.

In a statement released Wednesday by the Holy See Press Office, it is reported that on Monday, September 16, Cardinal Parolin held a videoconference with the Commissioner.

While acknowledging that the cardinal had thanked the Russian mediator for her role in the release of two Ukrainian priests, he noted that the cardinal had “underlined the need to safeguard fundamental human rights as defined in international conventions in the context of the current conflict.”

“He also discussed,” the statement added, “several humanitarian issues, including assistance to Ukrainian soldiers held as prisoners in the Russian Federation and the mutual exchange of soldiers held in Russia and Ukraine.”
