The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, arrived in Paris on Wednesday January 15 for a two-day visit to participate in a symposium organized by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the centenary of the exchange of letters between the apostolic nuncio in France, Archbishop Bonaventura Cerretti, then the French Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré.

The exchange, which took place from January 11 to 17, 1924, constituted a historic agreement which established the legal framework for the creation of diocesan associations under the authority of bishops in France, filling a gap created by the law of 1905 on the separation of the Churches. and the State — the so-called Secularism Law.

One hundred years later, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, accompanied by the apostolic nuncio, Mgr Celestino Migliore, and the president of the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF), Mgr Éric de Moulins-Beaufort, archbishop of Reims, participates in a conference on Thursday. at the Quai d’Orsay.

The new French Prime Minister, François Bayrou, took the opportunity to meet the head of Vatican diplomacy at the Palais Matignon on Wednesday evening. At the end of the meeting, Cardinal Parolin was received by the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau, also responsible for religious affairs.

Finally, the Vatican Secretary of State met Thursday morning with the head of French diplomacy, Jean-Noël Barrot, at the Quai d’Orsay, to discuss subjects of mutual interest.
